Efficacy of Broncofurin in COPD management: improvements in sputum quality and respiratory function

Lung diseases represent a wide range of respiratory disorders that can severely affect pulmonary function and quality of life. Among the most prevalent, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common condition in the elderly, marked by persistent airflow limitation.

Due to its high prevalence and burden on healthcare systems, COPD management is a clinical priority aimed at symptom reduction, prevention of exacerbations, and deceleration of lung function decline. In addition to standard pharmacological therapies and respiratory rehabilitation, nutraceuticals may offer complementary benefits in the medium-term management of the disease.

In this study, we conducted a retrospective evaluation of prospectively collected data to assess the efficacy of Broncofurin, a supplement formulated to support respiratory function in elderly patients with stable COPD. Broncofurin includes active ingredients with known respiratory and immune benefits: N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Marshmallow root extract, Sundew, Red Poppy, and Vitamin C.

NAC is known for its mucolytic activity, promoting mucus thinning and improving expectoration. Marshmallow root has a soothing and emollient action, while Sundew acts as a traditional antitussive for persistent dry cough. Red Poppy provides natural sedative effects on the respiratory tract, and Vitamin C, with its antioxidant properties, helps strengthen immune defenses and reduce oxidative stress, common in chronic respiratory disorders.

Evaluation of Broncofurin’s efficacy on sputum and lung function

We retrospectively analyzed prospectively collected data in a single-center, single-arm study to assess the effectiveness of Broncofurin as adjunctive therapy on sputum quality and respiratory function in 40 elderly patients with stable COPD.

Objective symptoms like cough, wheezing, and sputum were evaluated, along with scores from the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) — a validated tool measuring the impact of chronic respiratory conditions on daily life, symptoms, and emotional well-being.

The results showed a significant symptom improvement from baseline after one month of treatment (T1), with additional progress observed at three months (T2).

Conclusion

Our study suggests that targeted nutraceuticals like Broncofurin may support symptom control in elderly COPD patients. Improvements in sputum quality and pulmonary function indicate potential benefits in the comprehensive management of COPD. Further research is recommended to confirm these outcomes.
